Data Level Comparison of
Direct Volume Rendering Algorithms

Abstract:

This work addresses the issue of uncertainties introduced during the process of direct volume rendering (DVR). Specifically, different DVR algorithms produce slightly (some drastically) different images. We investigate methods for visualizing and explaining these differences. One of the key tasks is to simulate different DVR algorithms using a base or common method. To date, we have some preliminary results using two different base methods: ray-based and projection-based. We also demonstrate that the simulation of DVR algorithms with a common base algorithm is reversible. That is, if a ray-based algorithm can be simulated with a projection-based algorith, then a projection-based algorithm can be simulated by a ray-based algorithm.
